Evonik Launches Glossy Paint Innovation

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2015

German special chemicals company Evonik Industries has developed a new coatings technology designed to deliver glossy exterior coatings that are permeable to water vapor from the inside.

Called TEGOVAPRO, the technology is based on a multilayered acrylate dispersion, the company reported Wednesday (Sept. 23) in a news release.

The co-binder technology allows paint formulators to create high-quality exterior coatings ranging from semi-matte to high-gloss.

Glossy, Breathable Exteriors

The company notes that builders have traditionally opposed using glossy paints for exteriors because the coatings lack breathability.

“When water vapor presses against the coating from the inside, it often produces cracks or bubbles,” Evonik explains.

The issue is not merely an aesthetic one, it can also cause damage to the building’s exterior, the company adds.

The new product addresses the problem without a negative impact on other formulation properties, such as weather resistance, according to the developer.

Daniel Brünink, director of global marketing for decorative coatings, says TEGOVAPRO can produce “a significant effect” by replacing just 20 percent of the primary binder.
