Silver Billed as the New White

MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 2015

So long, white. Silver and other metallic colors are the hottest shades on the horizon.

That’s the word from the National Coil Coating Association, which bills silver as the way of the future, at least in terms of prepainted metal products, such as building facades, roofing and home appliances.

The shift comes as “consumers continue to look for inexpensive ways to make products appear more upscale and manufacturers vie for ways to differentiate their products,” the association reports.

From building facades to appliances, silver, copper and other metallic colors are taking center stage, according to the National Coil Coatings Association.

“'Metallic’ appearance coatings which often contain aluminum flakes or mica impart a reflective property that to the naked eye has greater depth than the conventional smooth white finish,” the association suggests.

Aesthetics aside, there are practical benefits for the expanded use of metallic coatings on the prepainted stage, NCCA says. The coatings can be applied to steel or aluminum cost-effectively, providing both protection and product longevity.

Moreover, no matter the application, the demands on prepainted metals are extremely rigorous, the association adds.

Consumers are opting for more color options and a greater degree of flexibility when matching appliances to home decor, the association notes.

The finish must maintain its appearance for the life of the product by being able to resist color fade, corrosion, chemical attack, dirt retention, high temperatures, various extreme weather conditions and daily wear and tear, the association says.
