Webinar Doubles Up on Protection

THURSDAY, JULY 9, 2015

PITTSBURGH--What offers the best corrosion protection for steel: painting or galvanizing? The answer is both, according to the next free webinar from JPCL and SSPC.

"Painting Over Hot Galvanizing," set for 11 a.m. to noon July 15, will explain how paint and galvanizing work in synergy, extending the corrosion protection of a structure by 1.5 to 2.5 times than either technology alone.

Participants will learn how this combined approach extends coating life and reduces the overall cost of maintaining a structure.

Participants will be eligible to receive continuing-education credit from SSPC and may register here free.

What You'll Learn

When hot-dip galvanized steel is painted or powder coated, the duplex coating provides a more sophisticated manner of corrosion protection known as the synergistic effect, according to the American Galvanizers Association.

"Painting Over Hot Galvanizing" will explain the features of a "duplex system" that specifies painting over hot-dip galvanizing. The Thurston Avenue bridge in Ithaca, NY, is duplex coated for corrosion protection.

The exterior layer of paint or powder coating acts as an additional barrier and slows down the rate at which the zinc is consumed, greatly extending the life of the galvanized steel.

In return, the underlying galvanized coating acts as a noble primer, eliminating the pinhole corrosion and peeling effect often seen on bare steel, AGA notes. Once the exterior layer has been weathered down or damaged, the zinc beneath is still available to provide cathodic and barrier protection.

The webinar will delve into this technology in greater detail.
