Webinar Doubles Up on Protection

PITTSBURGH--What offers the best corrosion protection for steel: painting or galvanizing? The answer is both, according to the next free webinar from JPCL and SSPC.

"Painting Over Hot Galvanizing," set for 11 a.m. to noon July 15, will explain how paint and galvanizing work in synergy, extending the corrosion protection of a structure by 1.5 to 2.5 times than either technology alone.

Participants will learn how this combined approach extends coating life and reduces the overall cost of maintaining a structure.

Participants will be eligible to receive continuing-education credit from SSPC and may register here free.

What You'll Learn

When hot-dip galvanized steel is painted or powder coated, the duplex coating provides a more sophisticated manner of corrosion protection known as the synergistic effect, according to the American Galvanizers Association.

Cornell University

"Painting Over Hot Galvanizing" will explain the features of a "duplex system" that specifies painting over hot-dip galvanizing. The Thurston Avenue bridge in Ithaca, NY, is duplex coated for corrosion protection.

The exterior layer of paint or powder coating acts as an additional barrier and slows down the rate at which the zinc is consumed, greatly extending the life of the galvanized steel.

In return, the underlying galvanized coating acts as a noble primer, eliminating the pinhole corrosion and peeling effect often seen on bare steel, AGA notes. Once the exterior layer has been weathered down or damaged, the zinc beneath is still available to provide cathodic and barrier protection.

The webinar will delve into this technology in greater detail.

About the Presenter

The presenter will be Kevin Irving, Marketing Manager of Northern Operations for AZZ Galvanizing Services. Irving has more than 20 years of experience in the hot dip galvanizing industry. He is a board member of Chemical Coaters Association International and Vice Chair of the NACE Committee on Hot Dip Galvanizing TEG 428X.

Presenter Kevin Irving is Marketing Manager of Northern Operations for AZZ Galvanizing Services and a NACE certified coating inspector.

Irving is a member of both NACE and SSPC and has spoken before both organizations.

Webinar Series

The webinar is part of the 2015 JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board.
