Expert Offers Key to Commercial Work

PITTSBURGH—After 40 years in the industry, Ken Trimber knows how to protect your interests on a commercial coatings project.

Quality control, he says, is the key.

Why QC

The “most important reason” to perform quality control is to ensure that the work is being performed per the project specifications, according to Trimber.

Should a problem arise, it’s not always the painting contractor’s or the paint manufacturer’s fault, Trimber says. But these parties may be blamed for problems not of their making.

For example, the true culprit in a coating failure may be with the condition of the building, such as moisture intrusion, he says.

Therefore, conducting quality control is very important to all parties on a coating project, Trimber adds.

All Parties to Benefit

Quality inspections are becoming more prevalent in commercial coatings work, but they are not yet as formal as they are in the industrial environment, Trimber says.

Commercial coatings contractors can use independent bodies to verify that they are complying with project specifications, in order to protect themselves should a problem arise.

Architects, too, can perform quality assessments in the form of unannounced spot checks throughout the work to help protect their interests.

Owners or their representatives can also perform assessments during the project to ensure the quality of the work.

Trimber says quality control inspections can provide each party an added layer of protection—not to mention, peace of mind.
