Comment Time Closing on Paint Standard

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.—This is the last week to submit comments on Green Seal's proposed overhaul of its standards for paints, coatings, stains and sealers.

The third-party product certifier is inviting public comments until May 31 on the proposal, which would both reorganize and enlarge the standard.

Green Seal has issued a call for comments on its proposal, which would combine two standards and enlarge the scope of the resulting one.

Green Seal wants to combine two current standards (GS-11 and GS-47) into one titled, “GS-11, Green Seal Standard for Paints, Coatings, Stains and Sealers.”

Scope Expansion

The organization is also seeking to add new product categories to the standard's scope, including transparent wall coatings, floor coatings, concrete/masonry sealers and fire-resistant coatings.

However, anti-graffiti coatings and products containing nanoparticles will be explicitly excluded from the scope and therefore not certifiable under this standard, according to Green Seal.

Modern Safety Techniques
Key Resin Company
  • Updating references on VOC limits and measurement methods to reflect California Air Resources Board regulations.
  • Harmonizing the definition of VOCs with regulatory programs and evaluating individual VOCs only for compounds present above 0.01 percent in a product; and
  • Adding limited ingredient-specific prohibitions and exemptions to the criteria for carcinogens, prohibited ingredients (halogenated solvents) and packaging. These include:
    • Prohibitions for triclosan;
    • An allowance for PCBTF at a limited concentration in metal lacquers; and
    • Clarification related to crystalline silica.

Stakeholders may register and submit comments here, where details of the plan are also available.
