Concrete Group Elects Officers, Board
FARMINGTON HILLS, MI—A leading expert in seismic response of buildings and corrosion in concrete structures will lead the American Concrete Institute (ACI) for the 2015-16 term.
ACI's membership has elected Sharon L. Wood, the dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, as president. She succeeds William E. Rushing Jr., the vice present of Waldemar S. Nelson & Co. Inc., of New Orleans.
Rushing’s one-year term as president and Wood’s two-year term as vice-president expired at the conclusion of the ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition, held April 12-16, in Kansas City, MO.
About Wood
Wood has been a member of ACI since 1983 and has held numerous chair positions within the organization. Currently, she serves on ACI Committee 318, Structural Concrete Building Code.
Wood has been a member of the faculty at UT since 1996. Her current and past areas of research include seismic response of buildings; design and evaluation of reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges; and the development of passive sensors to detect the onset of corrosion in concrete structures.
She received her B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a licensed professional engineer in Texas.
Vice Presidents, New Board
Khaled Walid Awad, chairman and founder of ACTS, a material and geotechnical consulting firm of Beirut, Lebanon, was elected to serve as the organization’s vice president. Awad will fill the seat that Wood previously held.

Michael J. Schneider, the senior vice president and chief people officer at Baker Concrete Construction, of Ohio, is the Institute’s other current vice president. His two-year term will end in Spring 2016.
