Revamp Underway for Coating Standard

WASHINGTON, DC—Fire-resistant coatings, concrete and masonry sealers, and other high-performance product categories are expected to join the next generation of Green Seal's paint and coatings standard, which is now in development.
The third-party product certifier is seeking comments on its plans to overhaul its standards for paints, coatings, stains and sealers.
Comments will be accepted until May 31 on the proposal, which would both reorganize and enlarge Green Seal's current standard.

Green Seal wants to combine two current standards (GS-11 and GS-47) into one standard, titled, “GS-11, Green Seal Standard for Paints, Coatings, Stains and Sealers.”
Scope Expansion
The organization is also seeking to add new product categories to the standard's scope, including transparent wall coatings, floor coatings, concrete/masonry sealers and fire-resistant coatings.
However, anti-graffiti coatings and products containing nanoparticles will be explicitly excluded from the scope and therefore not certifiable under this standard, according to Green Seal.

Green Seal has proposed a scope expansion for its standard on paints, coatings, stains and sealers to include floor coatings and others.   |
- Updating references on VOC limits and measurement methods to reflect California Air Resources Board regulations.
- Harmonizing the definition of VOCs with regulatory programs and evaluating individual VOCs only for compounds present above 0.01 percent in a product; and.

Adding limited ingredient-specific prohibitions and exemptions to the criteria for carcinogens, prohibited ingredients (halogenated solvents) and packaging. These include:
- Prohibitions for triclosan;
- An allowance for PCBTF at a limited concentration in metal lacquers; and
- Clarification related to crystalline silica.

Green Seal develops standards for, and certifies a variety of, building products based on environmental and performance criteria.
The organization's standards aim to "reduce the environmental impacts associated with the manufacture, use and disposal of products, to the extent technically and economically feasible.
