Thanking Vets, One Mural at a Time

For the third time in his career, a New York painter is getting ready to tour the U.S., painting waving American flags on buildings across the country.

But this time, Scott LoBaido, 50, plans to paint the rooftops, walls and facades of Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) buildings and American Legion posts in every state, according to

The project is a thank-you for veterans, says LoBaido, who embarks on the six-month patriotic journey Feb. 20.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for veterans and helping them, and not only raising funds but celebrating them and thanking them for bringing us the freedom we enjoy,” LoBaido told

The artist launched his first national circuit in 2006, adorning a variety of buildings with flags as a way to show support to the American military.

Two years later, he did a second tour to touch up the flag paintings.

Flag painter

In 2006, LoBaido made his first cross-country flag-painting tour. The current trek is LoBaido’s third mission.

LoBaido aims to keep his third tour low budget and will treat the time and expenses as a donation to the veterans’ organizations, the report said. Corporate and not-for-profit sponsors are helping to pay for the $85,000 trip, the report noted.

A send-off fundraising cocktail party for “Flags Across America III” is scheduled for Feb. 16 in Staten Island.
