Bidding Open on 2MG Oregon Water Tank
Contractors have until Jan. 28 to bid on interior and exterior cleaning and coating work on a 2-million-gallon welded steel, ground-level water storage reservoir in Veneta, OR.
Work on the 31-foot-tall, 104-foot diameter reservoir includes surface preparation and recoating of all interior surfaces; spot repair of exterior coating failures; and fabrication and installation of a reservoir roof vent and roof access hatch, which will include removing the existing vent and hatch.
Scope of Work
Exterior surfaces will be cleaned by pressure washing to SSPC-SP WJ-4 (Waterjet Cleaning of Metals-Light Cleaning). Surfaces in need of spot repair will be power tool-cleaned to Bare Metal (SSPC-SP 11) and coated with a zinc-rich primer and urethane topcoat system.
New appurtenances and the new access hatch and vent will be painted with a zinc-rich primer, moisture-cured high-solids epoxy sealer, and urethane topcoat system.
The existing exterior sealant between the foundation and steel bottom plate will have to be removed and a new sealant installed.
Interior surfaces will be cleaned to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10) to remove the existing coal tar coating, and then lined with a zinc epoxy system.
Contractors will use metal primer paint compatible with the required finish coats; locations in contact with process water will use only primer approved for potable water use. Aluminum materials in contact with concrete, other metals or other masonry materials will receive one coat of epoxy primer followed by two coats of a coal tar epoxy.
Miscellaneous shop coating to metal work may also be necessary.
Lead Testing Required
No lead was detected in samples of the interior coating that were field tested. The exterior coating, a well-adhered epoxy/urethane system applied in the 1980s, was not tested for lead.
Although it is believed that little to no lead exists in the interior or exterior coatings, the contractor will be required to test all waste generated by surface preparation for lead content.
