Hempel Expands with New Acquisition

Taking a "step towards achieving its growth ambition," Hempel has acquired a Dutch maker of industrial, protective and decorative coatings.

The acquisition of Schaepman's Lakfabrieken B.V. (Schaepman Coatings) is part of the five-year "One Hempel—One Ambition" growth strategy and advances Hempel's goal of becoming a top 10 global coating supplier by the end of 2015, the company said.

By mutual agreement, terms of the sale were undisclosed.

Broadening the Base

Established in 1830, Schaepman will gain access to Hempel's products and global support in the acquisition, while Hempel's global presence will expand the potential market for Schaepman's products, the companies said.

"We are focused on developing or acquiring new solutions that add real benefits to our customers. Schaepman represents what we were looking for," said Pierre-Yves Jullien, Hempel's Group President and CEO.

"It has a solid position on the local market, a strong brand, innovative R&D, and specialist products that will enrich our global assortment," said Jullien.

Schaepman's CEO Berend ten Doeschate said the company would continue its own production in Kampen, Overijssel.

"With Hempel, we have found the perfect match," said Doeschate. "... Hempel's solid global presence will allow us to broaden our customer, geographical and technological base."
