Coral Colors 2015 Outlook

MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2014

Color experts at Sherwin-Williams have anointed an “uplifting, vivacious” coral the top trending color in 2015.

The paint maker’s 2015 Color of the Year selection, Coral Reef (6606), is described as the “perfect mélange of pink, orange and red that can be used to liven up any space.”

The “outgoing” color is the focus of the company’s Color Forecast 2015, comprised of 40 hues in four palettes: Buoyant, Chysalis, Voyage and Unrestrained.

Versatile Hue

“Coral Reef embodies the cheerful approach to design that we’re seeing for the coming year,” said Jackie Jordan, the company's director of color marketing.

“Its unexpected versatility brings life to a range of design aesthetics, whether traditional, vintage, cottage or contemporary.”

The 2015 Color of the Year "brings life to a range of design aesthetics," according to Sherwin-Williams' color expert.

Accenting a single wall or covering a front door or piece of furniture, the color's “outgoing personality begs for company,” the experts say.

4 New Palettes

The hue is part of the company’s Buoyant palette, which also features warm neutrals, buttery yellows, medium wood tones and metal finishes.

The Chrysalis palette is comprised of off-black, chalky neutrals and dusty blues. The colors offer a “calm oasis—a place to pause and find balance,” according to Jordan.

The Voyage palette draws from space tourism to undersea resorts, featuring hues imagined while emerging from the water into the atmosphere—undersea teal, bright green kelp, light watery blue and deep space purple.

Finally, Unrestrained celebrates “free-spired wanderlust” with saturated primary hues like sunny yellow, lively turquoise and bright blue, as well as black and white. Each can be used for a pop of color or combined to create a vibrant, energetic space.

Each year, Jordan and other Sherwin-Williams’ color experts research color influences from around the world to determine the annual color forecast and the Color of the Year.
