Coating Tackles Multimetal Corrosion

Cortec Corp. has rolled out an environmentally friendly, temporary coating designed to protect metals in indoor, outdoor and salt-spray environments.

Water-based VpCI-389 is designed to protect up to five years indoors and six to 24 months in unsheltered, outdoor settings.

Typical applications include aluminum, steel, cast iron, copper alloy and tin-plated steel substrates in overseas shipping, parts storage, equipment lay-up, parts processing and maintenace repairs.

Cortec calls VpCI-389 "completely safe and easy to use." The coating cures to a soft film and eventually hardens.

Traditional coatings rely on sacrificial metals (zinc, chromates, aluminum) for inhibition, Cortec notes.

"Due to the large particle size of these inhibitors, gaps exist which allow corrosion to start and eventually expand, causing coating failure," the company says.

Cortec calls the low-VOC product efficient in SO2 and H2S environments and easy to remove with alkaline cleaners.

VpCI-389 coating has been tested according to ASTM D-1748 (humidity chamber test) and ASTM B-117 (salt spray chamber test) and complies with RoHS requirements, the manufacturer says.
