Firestone Building Products Co. has expanded its vegetative roof system offerings to give architects a wider range of design possibilities.

The SkyScape Vegetative Roof System now includes modular, extensive, semi-intensive and intensive green roof designs, according to the Indianapolis, ID-based company.

“Beyond design, the SkyScape portfolio also offers highly functional, green building benefits to the building owner,” said Matt Barmore, sustainable systems product manager at Firestone Building Products.

“The product portfolio is engineered to meet the growing need for stormwater management on the rooftop.”

SkyScape also protects roofing materials from ultraviolet exposure, which extends the life of the underlying roofing system, the company says.

Easy to Install

Firestone says each SkyScape system is easy to install and weighs only 50 pounds, meeting criteria wind uplift criteria for most commercial buildings.

The ine includes a variety of systems that provide 100 percent recycled materials, functional stormwater management and complex designs.

The enhanced products include:

SkyScape Pregrown Modular System is built on the foundation of a 100 percent recycled high-density polypropylene. The sides of the unit are designed with a honeycomb structure to allow moisture and nutrient sharing, the company says.

Firestone has enhanced its current offerings for green roof products to include a 100 percent recycled honeycomb modular system.

The design maximizes the system’s ability to manage stormwater through unitized moisture retention reservoirs, and encourages air flow beneath the modules.

SkyScape Extensive System features a six-inch or smaller media depth, and is designed to create a lush, meadow-like green roof.

The company says extensive systems provide functional, effective stormwater management, while creating an attractive rooftop environment.

SkyScape Semi-Intensive System uses a six- to eight-inch depth, which allows for more creatively designed spaces, the company says.

The use of accent species in semi-intensive systems adds plant diversity to the green roof to include sedum plant plugs, ornamental perennials, grasses, and bulbs.

SkyScape Intensive System includes an 8-inch or higher media depth to create wide-ranging and complex designs to achieve a true rooftop garden.

The company says it can also host larger conventional perennials – even shrubs or small trees – and a broad array of native forbs and grasses.

SkyScape Growing Media and Plants are available to add to the performance of a vegetative roof.

The company says plants are selected for their performance in rooftop microenvironments, and are grown under nursery care in the field for months before delivery.
