Garland Canada has introduced a cold-applied waterproof coating that aims to improve long-term performance of coal tar and asphalt roofing systems.

The new product — Energizer BK — is designed to be used as a flood coat over new and existing asphalt and coal tar roof systems or as a premium restoration material, according to the Toronto, Canada-based company.

Waterproof Coating

Energizer BK is specially formulated with an asphalt coal tar blend to provide water resistance in addition to strength and flexibility.

Garland says to product provides “natural resistance to moisture, chemicals, UV and aging, improving the long-term performance and reducing life-cycle costs."

“Energizer BK is a versatile waterproof coating that adheres well to a variety of roofing systems,” Charbel Boulos, P.Eng., president of Garland Canada Inc., said in a company announcement.

“It offers long-term performance and low maintenance costs, significantly reducing life-cycle costs associated with standard roofing systems.”

Since Energizer BK is cold-applied, it eliminates many of the harmful emissions of a conventional hot-applied coal tar system. But, the company says, it provides that same performance benefits.

In addition to being cold-applied, the product is fiber reinforced to provide sag resistance, increased tensile strength, crack resistance and improved weathering resistance.
