How to roughen and clean concrete for proper coating application is the focus of the latest installment in the PaintSquare Video Learning Center series.

"Concrete Cleanliness" joins the instructional series that covers multiple aspects of protective coatings work.

Improving Adhesion

In this video (6:53), KTA's Ken Trimber discusses the importance of surface cleanliness and roughness of concrete before applying coatings.

"Most manufacturers of coatings for concrete require the surface to be cleaned and roughened prior to the application of their coating system," Trimber explains.

"The surface area of the concrete is effectively increased by the roughening process, which in turn improves the adhesion of the coating system to the concrete."

Concrete Prep Standards

Trimber describes a number of standards that address preparation of concrete:

  • ASTM D4258, Standard Practice for Surface Cleaning Concrete for Coating, describes methods of cleaning that remove grease, dirt and loose material, but not coatings;
     
  • ASTM D4259, Standard Practice for Abrading Concrete, describes ways to remove materials including coatings and roughen the surface;
     
  • ASTM D4260, Standard Practice for Liquid and Gelled Acid Etching of Concrete, describes preparing bare concrete by acid etching;
     
  • ASTM D4261, Standard Practice for Surface Cleaning Concrete Unit Masonry for Coating, adds mechanical tool cleaning to the methods described in D4258; and
     
  • SSPC-SP 13/NACE No. 6, Surface Preparation of Concrete, describes methods available for cleaning a variety of concrete surfaces but doesn't dictate a method to use or provide explicit acceptance criteria, and is more like a guidance document than a standard.

"The surface area of the concrete is effectively increased by the roughening process, which in turn improves the adhesion of the coating system to the concrete," Trimber explains.

The roughness of concrete can be evaluated using various methods, Trimber notes.

One available standard is ICRI Standard 310.2, Selecting and Specifying Concrete Surface Preparation for Sealers, Coatings, Polymer Overlays, and Concrete Repair with CSP Chips.

ICRI has 10 distinct concrete surface profiles in rubber coupons that can be compared with the surface.
