Getting the Goods on Sneaky Moisture

Undetected moisture in concrete can wreak havoc with a coating project, making accurate moisture measurement a must before the project begins.

In "Concrete Moisture Testing," the newest addition to the PaintSquare Video Learning Center, contractors learn how to make those measurements to product a successful coating job.

Created and narrated by experts at KTA-Tator Inc., the Video Learning series covers a wide range of topics in protective coatings work, from quality-control and health and safety issues, to basics on the proper use of coatings instruments.

Assessing Moisture

In this video (5:54), KTA's Ken Trimber provides an overview of moisture assessment in concrete.

"Water or moisture is a vital component in the formation and curing of concere; however, once the curing process is completed, residual moisture remaining can be detrimental to an applied coating film," Trimber notes.

Trimber explains several instruments and techniques available to measure moisture in concrete floors and walls.

He describes the ASTM standards and methods for quantitative ways to measure moisture, both non-destructive and destructive. They include:

  • ASTM F1869, "Standard Test Method for Measuring Moisture Vapor Emission Rate of Concrete Subfloor Using Anhydrous Calcium Chloride," non-destructive;
     
  • ASTM F2170, "Standard Test Method for Determining Relative Humidity in Concrete Floor Slabs Using in situ Probes," destructive;
     
  • ASTM F2420, "Standard Test Method for Determining Relative Humidity on the Surface of Concrete Floor Slabs Using Relative Humidity Probe Measurement and Insulated Hood," non-destructive;
     
  • ASTM D4263, "Standard Test Method for Indicating Moisture in Concrete by the Plastic Sheet Method," non-destructive;
     
  • ASTM F2659, "Standard Guide for Preliminary Evaluation of Comparative Moisture Condition of Concrete, Gypsum Cement and Other Floor Slabs and Screeds Using a Non-Destructive Electronic Moisture Meter," non-destructive; and
     
  • ASTM F710, "Standard Practice for Preparing Concrete Floors to Receive Resilient Flooring," non-destructive.
