SSPC Seeking Superlative Structures

Daring bridge projects, artistic tanks, shipshape vessels and other striking coating projects are all eligible for 2015 SSPC Structure Awards, with nominations now open.

SSPC members have until Oct. 15 to submit nominations for the annual awards, which recognize teams of contractors, designers, end users and coating manufacturers for excellence in coatings projects.

The awards will be presented Feb. 3 at SSPC 2015, featuring GreenCOAT. The conference runs Feb. 3-6 at The LVH Hotel in Las Vegas, NV.

Winning structures will also be featured in a photo essay in JPCL after the conference.

All structure types are eligible, including bridges; tanks; and industrial or commercial facilities. Military structures are eligible for the Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence.

Award descriptions are listed below. Except for the Charles G. Munger and the Military Coatings awards, projects  must have been completed between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014.

Award Categories

William Johnson Award: For outstanding achievement demonstrating aesthetic merit in industrial or commercial coatings work.

Crone Knoy Award: For outstanding achievement in coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility. Examples include excellence in craftsmanship and use of techniques or products to creatively solve problems or provide long-term service.

Charles G. Munger Award: For projects demonstrating outstanding longevity of the original coating. The structure may have had spot repairs or overcoating with the original coating still intact.

The Marco Island Prudential Realty Building received the 2014 Charles G. Munger Award.

George Campbell Award: For outstanding achievement in completing an exceptionally difficult or complex coatings project. Challenges may include work in extreme environmental conditions; strict time constraints, limited access or high traffic areas; structures with complex components; or coordination with multiple trades or sub-contractors.

Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence: For exceptional coatings work on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities.

A representative of the structure's owner must attend the luncheon to accept the award and give permission for the project to appear in a JPCL photo essay.
