New How-To Offers Lead Guidance
Detecting lead and other toxic metals in existing coatings—a crucial prerequisite to developing a coating maintenance strategy—is the topic of a new instructional video on PaintSquare.
Field Lead Detection (3:22) is the second installment in the new PaintSquare Video Learning Center series. The 19-part series, created by KTA-Tator Inc., will explore many aspects of coatings inspection and protective coating work in short, targeted video segments.

Strategies and controls during coating maintenance work depend in part on accurately determining the presence of lead and other toxic metals in the existing coating system, according to the video, narrated by William Corbett of KTA.
Proceeding without appropriate controls may be hazardous to workers, the environment and the public, Corbett notes.
Moreover, "any detectable concentration of lead" triggers provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's "Lead in Construction" standard, making accurate detection a critical component of regulatory compliance, Corbett reports.
The most reliable method of determining coating lead levels is to collect samples representative of all the coatings in the structure, the video advises. These samples can then be analyzed in a lab using one of two methods that are extremely sensitive and can detect multiple metals in a single sample.

While chemical spot tests can be used in the field, lab analysis is more definitive and detailed, and can detect multiple metals in a single sample.
Sometimes, however, chemical spot tests are also needed in the field. The video walks the viewer through the use of one such lead kit.
The video notes that such kits will not indicate how much lead is present in a sample and may be inconclusive for lower lead concentrations.
