Containment Safety Opens Video Series
Assuring proper ventilation inside containment, a life-or-death issue, kicks off a new PaintSquare Video Learning Center educational series.
"Assessing Ventilation Inside Containment" is the first in an original 19-part instructional series that will delve into multiple aspects of protective coatings work.
Created and narrated by experts at KTA-Tator Inc., the series of short video segments will cover a wide range of topics, from quality-control and health and safety issues to basics on the proper use of coatings instruments. Each video is designed to be concise and easy to understand.
In the first video (3:40), KTA-Tator president Ken Trimber discusses a critical safety concern during surface preparation for maintenance coating work, which is often conducted inside containment.
"While the containment restricts the release of the debris to the environment, workers inside the containment are subjected to elevated concentrations of surface preparation debris, so the containment must be ventilated," Trimber notes.
Exposure levels vary from project to project, and individual monitoring is recommended, according to "Assessing Ventilation Inside Containment," available in the PaintSquare Video Learning Center.
The purpose of a ventilation system inside the enclosure is to control emissions to the environment, to provide visibility, and to provide air flow to protect workers from various toxic exposures created during prep activity.
In general, the greater the emissions-producing potential of the project, the greater the ventilation system needed, Trimber notes.
Trimber also references SSPC Guide 6, Guide for Containing Surface Preparation Debris Generated During Paint Removal Operations, which provides guidance and recommendations on containment and ventilation systems.
But he notes that exposure levels will vary from project to project, and that project officials must determine in each case whether the ventilation system is adequate.
The greater the containment system, the more critical the need for effective ventilation.
Various instruments, properly used, can help assure the system's effectiveness.
