Carboline Launches New Intumescent
Fire protection for commercial structural steel elements has a new option in Carboline Company’s Thermo-Lag E100, an advanced epoxy intumescent.
When exposed to a fire, Thermo-Lag E100 intumesces or swells, producing a heat-blocking char layer, which insulates the steel, according to the St. Louis-based maker of high-performance coatings, linings and fireproofing.
"The intumescent reaction and subsequent char production slows the rate of steel temperature rise and allows it to maintain its strength longer," Carboline said in a product announcement. "This increases the time for safe evacuation and firefighting measures in order to protect assets and save lives."
The coating is formulated to provide "high-quality aesthetics, rapid film build, and superior physical performance without the need for a mesh reinforcement layer," according to Carboline.
Thermo-Lag E100 is suitable for both offsite and onsite application, thus offering a "higher level of design and application flexibility," said Doug Moore, VP of Global Marketing at Carboline.
Certifications and Properties
Thermo-Lag E100 was designed to provide one- to three-hour cellulosic fire protection for commercial structural steel elements and has been certified in accordance with UL 263 / ASTM E119 / NFPA 251 fire test standards, the manufacturer says. It has passed the UL environmental test program and has been rated for both exterior and interior use.
The coating offers high film build and fast recoat properties, allowing applicators to apply the entire required thickness in minimal time, the company says.
