TQC Tool Analyzes Ship Hull Roughness

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2013

Ship performance may be easier to gauge with a new product from Thermimport Quality Control (TQC) that measures ship hull roughness and automatically calculates and saves the data.

Netherlands-based TQC says its DC900 Hull Roughness Analyser measures the average hull roughness value of sea-going vessels and can be used during both in-docking and out-docking.

TQC's new hull analyzer automatically calculates and stores the date and time, the location of the measurements, and the average hull roughness.

According to TQC, the average hull roughness value is the "mean" of all the vessel's hull roughness readings and is used to measure a ship's performance. The analyzer's accuracy is within +/- 5 microns or <2%, whichever is greater, the company says.

Control, Sensor Unit Features

The product's control unit has a four-way directional button that operates an intuitive menu and a large illuminated display for viewing graphical representations.

Data can be stored in multiple batches and survey reports in Microsoft Excel with the supplied USB cable and software. Statistics, date and time, the location of each series of measurements, and the average hull roughness are automatically calculated and stored in the control unit, the company says.

The unit has enough memory for four complete surveys, including both in- and out-docking, totaling over 10,000 readings, according to the company.

Modern Safety Techniques

The analyzer's sensor unit is equipped with three non-slip wheels and a carbide-tipped stylus. The sensor unit moves horizontally over the ship's hull to collect a series of measurements. A set of LED lights indicates the sensor's status so that it can be operated without observing the control unit.

According to the company, the system fits into a small-sized case that is waterproof and rugged. The analyzer also includes a neck strap.
