New Corrosion Conference Aims at Owners
Engineered Corrosion Solutions 2014, a new one-day conference aimed focused on helping U.S. facility owners tackle that $500 billion-a-year problem, will debut March 13 in the Chicago area.
The low-cost ($35) conference aims to provide owners from all industries with "an unbiased, factual understanding of the causes of corrosion at their facilities, and how to make informed choices in terms of treating these issues," organizers said in an announcement.
The conference is being coordinated by coatings consultant Warren Brand, owner of Chicago Coatings Group (and a PaintSquare News blogger).
"We focus exclusively on understanding corrosion and erosion on a practical, technical and fundamental level," the conference website says. "ECS presents state-of-the-art remedial solutions, and lectures on the total economic and managerial decision-making process."
Filling a Gap
Brand says he is not trying to compete with other corrosion-related conferences, but rather, to bring more resources specifically to owners in his region.
(SSPC 2014 will be held Feb. 10-13 in Orlando, FL; NACE's CORROSION 2014 will run March 9-13 in San Antonio, TX. The Department of Defense's last bricks-and-mortar biennial corrosion conference, in 2011, was in California and went virtual this year.)
Organizer Warren Brand says he wants to fill an information gap on corrosion and erosion in the U.S. Midwest.
“In speaking with thousands of owners over the years, I developed a sense that there was a void of information in the Chicago area," said Brand.
"So we designed this conference to be relevant for everyone: for industry, commercial, municipality, museums, zoos, bridges, nuclear—really, anyone who struggles with degradation of assets through corrosion and erosion.”
Whether the asset is a circuit board or a coal stacker, Brand said, "the fundamentals remain constant.”
And yet, he adds, "I've always been amazed and frustrated at how much money is wasted on less-than-optimal solutions."
The conference aims to help owners identify less costly, longer-lasting corrosion solutions.
The conference will focus on less costly, longer-lasting corrosion solutions, organizers say.
The event will include lectures on all aspects of corrosion, including options for repair and maintenance, the economics of corrosion, and how to make optimal decisions about addressing corrosion. The tentative presentation lineup includes:
The event will also include a "very selective list" of exhibitors, organizers say.
As of Tuesday (Dec. 17), the exhibitor list numbered 14 major companies: AZZ Galvanizing, Carboline, Corrpro, CIM Industries, Fibrwrap, Insituform, International Paint, Odle, Polar Clean, PPG, Renewal Compounds / Belzona, Sherwin-Williams, Termarust and Versaflex.
The exhibitors do not include Brand or his company, and the conference will not promote either, the coordinator says.
"We want the show to be educational and of value," said Brand. "At this point, we are primarily looking for attendees."
