Concrete Product Tackles Efflorescence
NewLook International is touting a permanent solution for concrete and masonry efflorescence with its new admixture, called EffLock.
According to NewLook, EffLock’s water-based nano-fusion technology reacts with and permanently binds sodium-based impurities in concrete to permanently prevent the leaching of both primary and secondary efflorescence.
The nanotechnology of EffLock’s chemistry is 100,000 times smaller than the smallest cement particle, which allows it to pass through cement minerals or hollow sand and become part of the cement or sand with which it reacts, the manufacturer says.
Efflorescence occurs when moisture in concrete migrates to the surface and carries salt minerals that react with air to create calcium carbonate. It typically appears as an unsightly, white chalky deposit on the surface, which can be difficult to remove.
Reacting with Water
Other products react with oxygen to reduce efflorescence, according to NewLook. EffLock, on the other hand, reacts with hydrogen, so it needs water to react. EffLock stops reacting when the concrete mixture dries out but will react each time the concrete gets wet, preventing the formation of efflorescence for the life of the concrete, according to NewLook.

Secondary efflorescence shows on the dam of the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station. EffLock is designed to prevent efflorescence.
“While other products try to minimize water intrusion, EffLock uses the presence of water to its advantage,” said NewLook vice-president Jacob Webb.
EffLock can also help brighten integral colorants and improve the performance of densifiers and penetrating sealers, said Webb.
Applications and Features
EffLock can be used with all cement types and ingredients, including lime, calcium, alpha and beta gypsum, fly ash, volcanic ash and hydraulic cement. Cure and seal products may still be used on EffLock-treated concrete.
EffLock is available in liquid or powder admixture form, as well as a topical spray for existing concrete and masonry surfaces.
