Paint/Graffiti Remover Touts Safety

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2013

Cortec Corp. has unveiled two heavy-duty, anti-corrosion paint strippers and graffiti removers billed as “the safest on the market.”

EcoClean VpCI-432/433 are rapidly biodegradable, non-corrosive, non-toxic products designed to remove polymers, inks, resins and coatings from concrete and wood surfaces, as well as two-part epoxies from metals without damage, the manufacturer says.

No Solvents

The products are formulated without methylene chloride, chlorinated solvents, methanol, toluene and acetone, making them safe for consumers and the environment, Cortec reports. The use of methylene chloride has been linked to many workplace deaths and has been the subject of government health and safety alerts.

Cortec offers this look at the effect of its heavy-duty paint stripper on a metal tank.

In addition, Cortec says, the EcoClean products remain on the surface to soften, penetrate and remove the coating, unlike methylene chloride-based products that evaporate quickly.

The multipurpose formulations can be stored indoors without restrictions and can used with a wide range of paints, lacquers, enamels, waxes, alkyds, acrylics, urethanes and epoxies.

Formulations and Features

Stripping time varies from three to 30 minutes, depending on the coating and the number of layers to be removed.

EcoClean VpCI 432 and 433 are available as heavy-duty liquid or gel formulations and contain vapor- and contact-inhibiting compounds to prevent corrosion, flash rusting and discoloration of ferrous metals, aluminum, copper and brass after paint removal, the manufacturer says.

The products are suitable for interior and exterior applications on a variety of substrates, Cortec says.

Both products are non-caustic, water cleanable and classified as exempt from Rule 422 (photochemically non-reactive).

Typical applications include metal tanks and pipes, spray booths, structural supports, spray equipment, machine tools, railcars, vehicles, airplanes, buildings, floors and pavement.

St. Paul, MN-based Cortec is a global supplier of environmentally responsible VpCI and MCI corrosion-control technologies for the construction, oil and gas, water treatment, and other industries.
