Paint Making Resumes at Sandy-hit Plant


One year after Hurricane Sandy slammed the East Coast, the drum of heavy machinery can be heard once again inside paint maker Benjamin Moore & Co.’s plant in Newark, NJ.

The facility—the company’s only producer of colorant—was shut down by the Oct. 29, 2012, storm after sustaining millions of dollars in damage, according to reports.

Benjamin Moore’s plant was one of hundreds of thousands of structures ravaged by Sandy. The powerful storm was further responsible for 117 deaths in the U.S. and 69 in Canada and the Caribbean.

Rebuilding and restoration projects are ongoing along the battered coast.

An Oct. 8 ceremony officially reopened the paint plant and put 55 people back to work, local news outlets reported. Workers who helped clean up the plant after the storm were also honored during the ceremony.

Damaged Production Lines

Six feet of water surging from the Passaic River was the cause of much of the damage seen inside the 280,000-square-foot facility, which originally opened a century ago, reports noted.

Luckily, the storm did not cause any permanent environmental damage at the facility, reports said, citing company officials.

Sandy upended much of the Benjamin-Moore plant's inventory but did not cause any permanent environmental damage, reports said.

“Before the storm, [the] Newark plant produced 8 million gallons a year of white paint, clear paint and colorant, which authorized retailers mix to create some of the company’s 3,500 colors,” according to The Star-Ledger.

The colorant line was repaired and replaced a couple months after the devastating storm, but other lines and damage to the structure and tanks took longer to repair and restore, reports said.

The cost of the restoration was not immediately available Wednesday (Nov. 6).

Founded in 1883, Benjamin Moore manufactures residential, commercial and industrial maintenance coatings.
