Free Roof Efficiency Calculator Updated

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2013

The National Roofing Contractors Association has revised its online EnergyWise Roof Calculator to incorporate updates of key international construction codes and add selected insulation data.

The calculator now includes:

NRCA represents all segments of the roofing industry, including contractors; manufacturers; distributors; architects; consultants; engineers; building owners; and city, state and government agencies.

What It Does

The free calculator is a web-based application that provides a graphical method of constructing virtual roof assemblies to evaluate thermal performance and estimated energy costs.

The application also provides minimum thermal insulation requirements established by ASHRAE Standard 90.1 (Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings), ASHRAE Standard 189.1 (Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings), IECC and IgCC.

This application determines "Annual Energy Cost" values, which NRCA says is useful when comparing the energy costs of various roof assembly designs. This value should not be confused with the building owner's overall energy costs, the association notes.

How It Works

The application prompts users to enter specific roof assembly information, such as roof area, climatic region, heating appliance type and cost, roof openings, and roofing materials to be used. Users then can generate a report summarizing the proposed roof assembly design, estimated heating and cooling costs, and required minimum thermal requirements.

Funding for the update was provided by The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, a forum of roofing contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and industry professionals who seek to advance the industry.
