Wood Coatings Look like Cement, Steel

MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2013

Specialty wood coatings made to look like concrete and steel have been introduced by the Italian coatings manufacturer ICA Group.

The new “Urban Matter” line of interior coating products for medium density fiberboard or melamine paper are designed with a contemporary style that is refined, yet realistic, according to the company.

ICA says the two finishes available in the Urban Matter line, Cement and Corten, offer a “rough appearance of the material being simulated while also offering the warmth to the touch that only wood can provide,” the company says.

Cement Effect

An industrial look and “powdery” colors characterize the Cement Effect finish, the company notes. The range features three gray tones.

The effect is produced through a coating cycle that combines a water-based base coat with a special effect Vellumatt gray in three different shades, the company says. The surface is top coated with a transparent matte acrylic top coat, according to product literature.

Spray and spatula applied, the Cement Effect finish is smooth to the touch and features good chemical and physical resistance, ICA adds.

The Corten Effect finish is described as “lived-in,” with an uneven surface characterized by light and dark nuances that reproduce the deep coloration of natural Corten steel.

The effect is produced through a coating cycle that combines a matte black polyurethane base coat with water-based aging agents, flower yellow and oxide red, according to the company.  The color movement is generated by means of a jet of compressed air on the coated surface, ICA Group said.

The spray-applied effect features excellent resistant to light, according to the company.
