$4.7M Awarded for PA Bridge Rehab

A Pennsylvania painting contractor has received a $4.7 million contract to rehabilitate the 81-year-old Citizens Bridge in Kittanning, PA.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) awarded the $4,706,071 contract to Advanced Painting Systems, Inc., of Allison Park, PA.

Also called Kittanning Bridge, the historic 949-foot-long by 30.5-foot-wide Parker through truss pedestrian and vehicular structure connects Kittanning and West Kittanning over the Allegheny River.

Scope of Work

The project includes cleaning and recoating 295,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces. The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10), tested for soluble salt with chloride remediation as needed, and recoated with a three-coat organic zinc-epoxy-urethane system selected from NEPCOAT List B.

The existing coatings contain lead; containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 and waste disposal according to Guide 7 are required.

The project also includes commercial power tool cleaning (SSPC-SP 15), vacuum-shroud power tool cleaning to SSPC-SP 3, and spot-coating 180 square feet of top flange steel surfaces with an organic zinc-rich primer. The contract also calls for additional spot/maintenance coating application.

The project includes 3,165 square yards of epoxy-based surface treatment for bridge deck surfaces.
