Garland Raises $40K to Fight Cancer

Employees of a Cleveland, OH-based building-envelope product manufacturer have raised more than $40,000 to support an organization that aims to make lung cancer a survivable disease.

The Garland Co. said its employees raised the money to support the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, in part, during a week-long event, dubbed “Spirit Week,” held May 28 to June 1.

During the fourth annual fundraising event, about 100 employees at the company’s headquarters participated in fundraising activities to raise just over $20,000 for the foundation, according to Garland.

Touched by the generosity of its employees, Garland’s Board of Directors later announced that the company would match the amount raised, bringing the total to $40,634, Garland noted in an Aug. 7 announcement.

Lung Cancer's Toll

More people in the U.S. die from lung cancer than from any other type of cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the most recent numbers available, 87,694 men and 70,387 women died of lung cancer in 2009. The same year, 110,190 men and 95,784 women in the U.S. were diagnosed with the disease.

Funding Awareness

“The outpouring of support demonstrated by The Garland Company is truly amazing,” said Bonnie J. Addario, founder of the organization and a lung cancer survivor.

Garland employees held an auction to help raise the funds.

“Garland is helping raise awareness for a disease that is sorely under-funded and under-researched. Their generosity will help lung cancer patients everywhere live longer, fuller lives.”

The foundation is one of the largest philanthropies devoted exclusively to eradicating lung cancer, according to its website. It has raised more than $10 million to fight the disease through early detection, education, treatment, awareness, clinical trials and research that impacts patients.

The foundation has also established the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute, an international research consortium of major institutions and community hospitals.

Special Connection

Garland said it had a special connection to the foundation: An employee’s wife is an active member of the organization and a Stage IV lung cancer survivor.

The Garland Co. is a global manufacturer of high-performance roofing and building maintenance systems for the commercial, industrial and institutional markets.
