PPG Signs New Hockey Deal

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2017

Paint and hockey make for a winning combination; at least, that’s what PPG and the National Hockey League wager.

The two have recently teamed up on a multi-year corporate marketing agreement, where PPG paint brands will become the “Official Paint of the NHL" in the U.S. and Canada.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The agreement, announced Thursday (Feb. 23), builds upon PPG’s previously announced 20-year naming rights agreement with the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins team, according to the company. That agreement renamed Pittsburgh’s former Consol Energy Center as PPG Paints Arena.

The coatings manufacturer is also headquartered in downtown Pittsburgh.

A Brand Commitment

“We are excited to deepen our relationship with the National Hockey League and the millions of home-improvement consumers and paint professionals who follow their favorite NHL teams in the U.S. and Canada,” said Bryan Iams, PPG vice president, corporate and government affairs.

Iams said the investment further broadens the company’s ability to showcase its product lines. The partnership will enable the paint manufacturer to integrate its brands into select NHL premier events, including the NHL Stadium Series and annual Winter Classic game. The company’s branding will be viewable on and around the ice and in programs, scoreboard features and related opportunities.

Moreover, PPG will have the rights to use NHL marks and logos on its paint product packaging and other marketing as a part of the agreement.

A number of arenas around the country and in Canada already sport PPG paints and coatings in decorative and protective applications, according to the company’s announcement. The coatings are also found on hockey sticks and helmets and even help power the Zamboni ice resurfacing machine, PPG added.
