Powder Coatings Offer Oil, Gas Pipe Protection

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2016

Two new high-temperature, corrosion-resistant internal pipe coatings have been added to Axalta Coating Systems’ Nap-Gard Functional Coatings collection.

The Nap-Gard 7-0017HT and 7-0017VHT Black Beauty FBE products are described as thermosetting epoxy powders designed to provide excellent chemical resistance when operating in temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit).

Axalta Coating Systems has introduced two new high-temperature, corrosion-resistant pipe coatings—Nap-Gard 7-0017HT and 7-0017VHT Black Beauty—to its Nap-Gard Functional Coatings collection; they are designed for use on external and internal oil, gas and water pipelines.

According to the Philadelphia-based manufacturer, corrosion caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), often found in sour crude oil, is a major challenge for the oil and gas industry.

These new high glass transition (Tg) temperature internal pipe coatings are designed to combat this problem, the company says.

When properly applied with Nap-Gard 7-1808 primer Nap-Gard 7-0017HT and 7-0017VHT, the coatings exhibit extreme corrosion protection against high levels of H2S and CO2, as well as methane (CH4), even at high temperatures and pressures, it explains.

The Nap-Gard collection of powder coatings are meant to be used on external and internal oil, gas and water pipelines with single, dual, and multi-layer application options, according to the company.

Nap-Gard also provides corrosion protection products for coating valves, fittings and rebar, it says.

Noting that the company is excited to bring these functional products to the oil and gas industry, Meghan Hodge, Axalta global product marketing manager for Functional Coatings says, “Our new high-temperature internal pipe coatings are formulated to provide superior corrosion protection in severe downhole environments.”
