New Product Announcement: Vertical Repair Mortar

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2022

Corrosion-prevention company Cortec Corporation recently announced the release of its new vertical and overhead repair mortar to inhibit corrosion and reduce the risk of the ring-anode effect. MCI-2040 is a single-component, cement-based repair mortar enhanced with the company’s Migrating Corrosion Inhibitors.

According to the release, MCI-2040 can be applied to vertical and overhead surfaces, which can be paired with Cortec’s horizontal repair mortar, MCI-2041, for repair mortar at any angle. The new product also reportedly offers corrosion protection to reinforcing metals both in the patch and in the surrounding areas.

Cortec reports that the Migrating Corrosion Inhibitors in the concrete repair mortar penetrate the substrate and even out corrosion potentials between patched areas and nearby concrete, slowing down the ring-anode or halo effect in the surrounding concrete.

Possible applications for MCI-2040 include undersides of bridge decks, parking ramps, balconies and ramps, as well as concrete columns, retaining walls, building facades and soffits. Cortec notes that, for best results, the mortar should be applied following the five steps of the MCI High-Performance Repair System:

Just Like New Overspray Management
Modern Safety Techniques
  • Prepare the substrate;
  • Treat and clean rusted rebar in concrete;
  • Apply repair materials (e.g., MCI-2040) to reinstate concrete and mitigate rebar rust;
  • Apply surface applied corrosion inhibitors (optional for added protection); and
  • Apply final coating (optional for added protection).

Once applied and hardened, MCI-2040 reportedly provides a high level of adhesion and durability, as well as resistance to water and carbonation attack, increasing the quality and extending the service life of the repair and surrounding structure.

Cortec explains that MCI-2040 is easy-to-handle for fast-paced repair jobs, offering quick turnaround due to high early strength. It can also be applied like normal repair mortars, but without the need for bonding agents.
