New App Aids Aviation Corrosion Training

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2018

To help educated professionals in corrosion identification, the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training and the U.S. Navy Sea Warrior Program worked in conjunction to develop a newly released mobile app that implements an interactive, score-based gaming scenario that augments existing knowledge of corrosion.

According to Mark Tinetti, CNATT instructional systems specialist, the app is not meant to substitute existing corrosion training, but is meant to add to it through visual identification of corrosion; understanding methods for the removal and treatment of corrosion; and materials used in corrosion prevention.

Corrosion Identification App

The Aviation Corrosion Challenge app uses photography and text to randomly generate elements associated with corrosion control, including types and effects on alloys. Users answer questions within a certain amount of time while earning points.

“The game format of this app is something we felt could be more appealing to users,” said Tinetti. “Individuals spend a lot of time on their phones and having a resource such as this immediately accessible is something we felt could effectively complement required training.”

Tinetti also added that the game allows for a review of questions at the end of each challenge, as well as an achievement section.

“Corrosion is one of the biggest challenges service members at squadrons, fleet readiness centers and other facilities face on a daily basis,” said Senior Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic Roger Nelson. “Incorporating this visual aid as something to augment training is something we’re hoping division officers and chiefs can stress to Sailors and Marines who deal with corrosion.”

The app offers public content, does not require authentication or authorization to access, and is available on Google Play for Android users; and iTunes for iOS users.
