Corrosion reportedly cost the United States Department of Defense $21.9 billion in 2014. For the U.S. Navy alone, annual corrosion costs are said to be $7.5 billion with vessel corrosion costs accounting for $3.2 billion.
The next free webinar from JPCL and SSPC, “Advanced Tank Coating Solutions for the Marine Sector,” will explore the technology shift in coatings and processes the Navy has undergone, and also provide performance requirements for coatings and linings used on sound marine structures in principal service environments.
The webinar will be presented by Mark Schultz, Project Development Manager - Government Marine for Sherwin-Williams, from 11 a.m. to noon ET (8 a.m. to 9 a.m. PT), Wednesday, Nov. 16.

What You Will Learn
In the presentation, Schultz will discuss how the Navy went from solvent-based technology to solvent-free technology; the benefits of doing so in terms of performance, schedule and cost; how the Navy inspects these types of coatings; and an effective tool for touch-up and repair of these very short pot-life materials.
Schultz has 22 years of industry experience, having started his career with Union Tank Car (a railcar manufacturer) before becoming a corrosion engineer. Now with the Sherwin-Williams Marine Group, Schultz is the technical liaison with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association, and new construction and maintenance shipyards.
He holds a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Illinois and is a NACE Instructor, NACE Certified Coatings Inspector and SSPC Protective Coating Specialist.
