Bids Invited for Farmhouse Paint Job

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is seeking an experienced painting contractor to clean and recoat a brick farmhouse at the Landis Valley Museum in Lancaster, PA.

The project involves cleaning and recoating exterior wooden surfaces on the structure, which was built in 1815.

Bids are due Aug. 29.

Scope of the Project

Most exterior surfaces, including cupola siding, are to be stripped to bare wood using infra-red strippers and appropriately shaped scrapers, according to the project details. Window sashes are not to be stripped. Shutters are to be removed for stripping. Heat guns may be used on tight and detailed areas, such as window frames and door jambs.

Wooden surfaces will be cleaned with mildewcide and coated with an oil-based primer and an acrylic latex semi-gloss finish.

The building has been repainted since 1978, but some lead-based paint may still be present.

The project also includes performing additional wood and trim repairs.

A cost estimate has not been released for the work.  A mandatory pre-bid meeting was held Aug. 15.

Experience Necessary

Painting contractors interested in bidding for the project must be skilled and experienced in the restoration of historic painted finishes including finish preparation and painting of historic interior and exterior architectural elements, according to the owner.

Opened in 1925, the Landis Valley Museum is a living history museum founded by brothers Henry and George Landis.

The Landis house, built in 1879, is another structure located on site.

The museum has been nationally recognized for its collections, conservations, exhibits and interpretations of Pennsylvania German heritage from 1740 to 1940, according to the museum’s website.
