Behr Paint Reveals 2024 Color of the Year

Last week, Behr Paint Company announced its 2024 Color of the Year, Cracked Pepper (PPU18-01). The 2024 COTY is also included in the expert-curated Behr Designer Collection of 30 neutral colors.
“As we look into 2024, creating a sense of comfort and belonging will continue to drive design decisions—but now, as life returns to its more familiar rhythms, it's time to allow our senses to come alive,” said Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color and Creative Services at Behr Paint Company.
“From heightening the aromas of a dining room to feeling the softness of a living area, Cracked Pepper enhances the natural expression in any space.”
According to the press release, new research conducted by the company reveals:
- More than half of Americans (54%) say black tones in the home create a new energy and vibe;
- Two-thirds (64%) of Americans agree that black tones in the home make a space feel bold;
- More than half (57%) of Americans say that painting a wall a dark(er) color gives the room a designer aesthetic;
- Three-quarters (74%) of Americans would consider painting an area or room a dark color;
- Half (50%) of Americans say a dark color on the wall(s) makes a room feel elevated;
- More than half of Millennials (61%) agree black tones instantly give the home a fresh look; and
- Half (50%) of Americans say a dark color on the wall(s) creates a sense of comfort in the home.

“We recognize the growing desire for using darker colors throughout spaces,” said Jodi Allen, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Behr Paint Company. “Adding a soft black like Cracked Pepper evokes a sense of confidence and individuality that we want all of our customers to feel after completing a project.”
The company goes on to describe that Cracked Pepper elevates design styles from modern, classic, casual, retro and more, while pairing seamlessly with other colors, finishes, patterns and textures. The hue can be incorporated into projects to make a bold statement or add an accent.
To celebrate the 2024 Color of the Year, Behr is hosting a sweepstakes on Instagram starting on August 16th. Five winners will reportedly each receive $10,000 to help them transform and elevate a space in their home with Cracked Pepper.
2023 Color of the Year
In September of last year, Behr announced its 2023 Color of the Year: Blank Canvas (DC-003).
The transformative white color, Behr noted, is meant to “clear the way for endless design possibilities” and is an opportunity for self-care. According to a study conducted by the paint manufacturer at the time, three-quarters of U.S. homeowners believe that white hues promote relaxation and create a sense of calm.
In a press release announcing the COTY, Behr went on to note that Blank Canvas can be leveraged by DIYers, designers and professionals to tackle any project, pairing well with pops of color to personalize any space.
The color is also an easy “go-to” to build upon when developing specific serene spaces such as in healthcare or hospitality, as well as in more neurodiversity-friendly residential and commercial spaces, or workplaces.
Earlier this year, in April, Behr also introduced its first-ever Exterior Wood Stain Color of the Year.
Cordovan Brown is described as a “richly satisfying hue with timeless appeal for a fresh outdoor environment.” The wood stain is reportedly transformative both on its own and when paired with beiges, grays and whites, including Blank Canvas.
The stain is available exclusively at The Home Depot in a variety of Behr products, including Behr Premium Solid Color Premium Waterproofing Exterior Stain, Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Exterior Stain, Behr Premium Advanced Deckover, Behr Solid Color House & Fence Wood Stain, and Behr Deckplus.
