In an attempt to end corruption and control wasteful spending, China’s leaders have imposed a ban on the construction of new government buildings for five years.

On Tuesday (July 23), Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an “across-the-board halt” to the construction of government buildings, training centers and hotels until 2019, according to a directive first reported by the Xinhau News Agency.

China's ban on government construction projects has been described as "important for building a clean government."

The joint directive was issued by the Communist Party’s central committee and the State Council, the report said.

Luxury Governmental Digs, Repairs Halted

“Glitzy new government buildings, sometimes in impoverished areas, have been a source of public outrage,” the BBC reported.

Luxury offices with “fancy lighting including chandeliers” have expanded in many cities, according to the Associated Press.

The construction ban includes the purchase, restoration or expansion of office compounds that are done under the guise of repair work or urban planning, according to Xinhau.

The directive also calls for officials who have multiple posts to have only one office and that the offices of retired government officials should be returned to administrators in a timely manner.

Those who fail to abide by the ban will be subject to “harsh punishment,” Xinhua reported.
