Town officials in Boxborough, MA, are seeking bids for lead remediation and painting of the century-old Town Hall.

The project involves lead removal, surface preparation and exterior painting of the two-story Victorian Eclectic style clapboard and fieldstone building that dates to 1901.

Bids are due July 18. Attendance at a pre-bid meeting July 11 is strongly recommended.

Scope of Work

The project involves Class 1 de-leading, scraping, and painting all previously painted exterior surfaces of the building, excluding cupola and gables.

Boxborough's red, white and blue Town Hall dates to 1901. Lead-paint removal is planned.

According to the Invitation for Bids, the contractor will scrape the substantially peeling surfaces of the building exterior before applying a single coat of high-build bonding primer and two coats of satin latex exterior finish.

Clapboard siding, corner boards, fascias, window and door trim, water table, columns at front of building, and the exterior door on the south side will be painted white. The front porch ceiling will receive a blue finish.

The double-door unit at the front of the building will be coated with a self-priming, mildew-resistant exterior acrylic latex in a shade of red matching that of the gables. The north-side entry should be sanded and coated with a two-coat system of either spar urethane or exterior-grade urethane.

The contractor will seal the exterior stairs at the south side of the building with a clear preservative. Pipe railings at the front steps will be wire brushed, spot primed with rust inhibitive primer, and painted with two coats of black industrial enamel.

Other Requirements

The contractor should also provide one gallon of each primer and paint for future touch-up.

Work should take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays only and excluding holidays. The building will remain in operation throughout the project. The majority of the work should be completed by Nov. 1, with the contract ending Dec. 31.

The building became Boxborough's Town Hall in 1901 after its 18th-century precedessor burned to the ground. The hall was restored to its original red, gray and white color palette. The building will also be receiving new windows under a separate contract that went to bid on July 8.
