A water utility in Maryland is inviting bids for cleaning, lead abatement and recoating of four hydro-pneumatic storage tanks and one elevated water tank in California, MD.

St. Mary’s Metropolitan Commission, the tank owner, did not release an estimate for the work. Bids are due Wednesday (June 26), and work must be completed by June 30, 2014.

The five tanks at Wilderness Run (pictured) and elsewhere will be abrasive-blast cleaned. All interiors and exteriors will be coated.

The ground tanks, which date to the 1980s, are located in the Hunting Quarters, Laurel Ridge, Wilderness Run, and Fox Meadow subdivisions. The age of the 150,000-gallon double-ellipse elevated water storage tank in Meadow Woods was not clear.

All of the ground tanks except Hunting Quarters have a capacity of 10,000 gallons. The Hunting Quarters tank can hold 9,000 gallons.

Scope of Work

Surface preparation and coatings work include abrasive-blast cleaning the tank interiors, as well as the interior piping, to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and then lining those surfaces with a two-coat epoxy system.

Meadow Woods

Some of the existing coatings have chrome and/or lead that will require containment.

Exterior surfaces will be abrasive-blast cleaned to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6) and coated with a four-coat zinc epoxy urethane system.

The Hunting Quarters and Fox Meadow ground tanks both contain chrome; the Laurel Ridge and Meadow Woods tanks contain both lead and chrome. Containment will be required.

Additional upgrades include pit filling and coupling replacements, as well as tightening loose sway rods and installing painter’s rails, roof handrails, and a new sidewall and roof ladder that will have a platform attached.

Hunting Quarters tank

The 9,000-gallon tank in Hunting Quarters is slated for a new coatings job.

Established in 1964, the St. Mary’s Metropolitan Commission serves 41,000 St. Mary’s County residents. The water and sewage system includes 12 elevated water storage tanks, 72 wells, and 54 pumping stations.
