Sherwin-Williams' Protective & Marine Coatings division has introduced Magnalux 404 FF, billed as the first styrene-free vinyl ester for use with steel and concrete substrates in the oil and gas market.

The new coating is specially formulated to combat immersion- and containment-service corrosion caused by contact with aromatic solvents, hi-aromatic gasoline, ethanol gasohol, MTBE, ETBE, TAME, ether/fuel blends, and other aggressive chemicals, the company says.

Features and Formulation

Magnalux 404 FF is a low-VOC (<15g/L), flake-filled, chemically resistant premium tank lining designed to provide chemical and temperature resistance.

Iron oxide flakes in the Magnalux 404 FF formulation create a physical barrier that resists corrosion from fluid migration, according to Sherwin-Williams.

Flakes, made of a crystalline form of iron oxide, provide improved edge protection and abrasion resistance and create a physical barrier that resists corrosion from fluid migration, according to Sherwin-Williams.

Because Magnalux 404 FF is styrene-free, it will not shrink and pungent odors are nearly eliminated, the manufacturer says. The 100 percent solids product can be applied in one coat and still achieve the correct thickness. It will cure tack-free without a wax solution, allowing for one less step in the application process and simplifying cleaning, the company says.

Ron Knecht, market director for Oil & Gas – North America, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, says the coating is environmentally safe, speeds application, and saves time and money.

“Magnalux 404 FF is an innovation in the oil and gas market,” said Knecht.
