Aluminum Finish for High-End Sectors

Global paint and coatings giant AkzoNobel has debuted a new aluminum coating system for the high-end residential, retail and monumental interiors markets.

CERAM-A-STAR E is a silicone-modified polyester (SMP) coating with proven durability and ease of application, the company says. Further, the coating system meets the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) 2604 specifications.

The new aluminum coating was based on technology developed for AkzoNobel's line of silicone-modified polyester coil coatings.

Designed for spray application, the coating system provides more consistent color control, chemical resistance and field repairability than anodized systems, according to the manufacturer.

Formula, Features

CERAM-A-STAR E’s proprietary resin formulation is the pillar of the new system, the company says.

Combined with ceramic and inorganic pigments, it is designed to provide color stability, chalk resistance, fade resistance and gloss retention.

The system allows for quick color changes during production and in-house color blending, including mica metallics, AkzoNobel says.

Development

CERAM-A-STAR E was developed from a coil coating product that has been used on millions of square feet in the field, according to Ben Mitchell, Extrusion Coatings Sales & Marketing Manager for AkzoNobel.

The system builds on the CERAM-A-STAR family of SMP coil coatings, adapted for the aluminum extrusion industry, the company says.

Architectural aluminum

Based on a coil coating product line in long use, CERAM-A-STAR E was developed to meet market need for a "universal aluminum coating system."

“A coating was needed that can coat aluminum, while allowing for uniformity in weathering and durability,” Mitchell said.

Testing in Middle East

Although just being launched at-large for the fenestration market, the product was recently tested in the Middle East, the manufacturer says.

Multiple colors and finish options were evaluated, and all met the level of durability called for in AAMA 2604, AkzoNobel says.

“The maximum achievable volume solids of a 50 percent PVDF coating are usually 26-28 percent,” according to Pakeer Ithrees, a senior chemist with AkzoNobel in Saudi Arabia. “However, you can achieve 48-54 percent volume solids with CERAM-A-STAR E.

"This results in almost twice the coverage per gallon, compared to 50 percent PVDF coatings."
