PPG Industries Inc.’s protective and marine coatings business has introduced an “entry-level” version of its premium antifouling Sigma Syladvance 800.

The new Sigma Syladvance 700 coating is a "high-performance antifouling designed specifically for ships working at medium to high rates of operation and medium speeds," according to PPG.

The new coating is based on Syladvance 800, but is billed as an "entry-level" product, "making premium technology available for a different set of requirements."

Silyl Acrylate Technology

Like Syladvance 800, self-smoothing Syladvance 700 is based on patented silyl acrylate polymer technology.

Syladvance 700

Like its premium predecessor, Sigma Syladvance 700 is based on silyl acrylate polymer technology.

The 800 version has been used on a wide range of vessel types for both newbuilding and maintenance/repair projects by a number of operators worldwide, according to PPG.

"The untainted nature of the binder delivers consistent antifouling performance and an uncompromised, predictable linear polishing pattern that, in turn, can significantly reduce frictional drag," the company said.

Sijmen Visser, PPG global marketing manager, marine, said silyl acrylate technology was "at the forefront of the drive to reduce fuel spend, which in many cases can take up 50 percent of an entire ship's daily operating costs. PPG has been working hard to develop hard-wearing, environmentally sound products that can offer fuel savings.”

Applications

The new coating can be specified for dry dock maintenance and repair projects, with performance for up to 60 months, said Visser.

"Its predictable polishing rate allows us to provide a tailor-made solution for each vessel’s profile and sailing pattern," he said.
