AkzoNobel Paint Targets Renewable Oils

Coatings made from algae-based renewable oils are the goal of a new partnership by AkzoNobel and bioproducts supplier Solazyme Inc.

The companies announced May 8 that they had entered into an agreement to develop advanced tailored oils and commercial sales for near-term product supply.

Paints, coatings and surfactants will be the market applications specifically targeted for product development using renewable oil.

The agreement is based on a "shared commitment to sustainability and high-performance products derived from triglyceride oils," the companies said.

Tailored oils can enhance or replace petroleum-derived chemicals and improve the performance of plant oils and animal fats. 

Focus on Coatings

Commercial supply of multi-thousand ton quantities of highly sustainable algal oil is expected to originate from the Solazyme Bunge Renewable Oils Joint Venture oil manufacturing plant in Brazil. Product development is focused on AkzoNobel paints, coatings and surfactants.

"AkzoNobel's leadership in specialty chemicals and sustainability makes them a natural partner for us to work with," said Jean-Marc Rotsaert, COO of Solazyme.

"Akzo's significant product sales and growth strategy in the Americas also overlaps well with our manufacturing footprint."

AkzoNobel said that Solazyme's tailored triglycerides would provide "valuable new technology" for the coating company's Surface Chemistry and Decorative Paints businesses.

"[W]e are excited about our partnership with such an innovative, promising new business," said Graeme Armstrong, Corporate Director for Research, Development and Innovation at AkzoNobel.

The agreement between AkzoNobel and Solazyme will use tailored oils for commercial product development.

Product development efforts are expected to start in the second half of 2013, and product sales are anticipated to begin in 2014. Pricing will be "competitive" and based on Solazyme's cost of manufacturing, the companies said.
