A project to paint interior and exterior surfaces at the oldest public library west of the Mississippi River is up for bid.

Multnomah County, OR, is seeking contractors to paint the historic three-story Central Library in Portland.

Bids are due May 23. A pre-bid meeting was held on May 6.

Repainting the Library

The exterior woodwork, doors and trim will be cleaned, repaired and coated with an alkyd primer and a semi-gloss, exterior-grade latex finish.

The Central Library is the oldest public library west of the Mississippi River, with  roots dating to 1864, according to the library's website.

The interior wall surfaces will be cleaned and coated with a zero- or low-VOC waterborne system. When mold or mildew is present, surfaces will be washed, and existing coatings and contaminants will be removed. Shiny surfaces should be de-glossed by sanding.

The contractor will be allowed to remove a small section of each wall surface to obtain an exact color match to the previous coatings, according to the bid documents.

Damaged areas are to be touched up before completion.

About the Library

Built in 1913, the 125,000-square-foot Georgian-style building has a brick exterior. The interior is embellished with marble and wood.

Designed by architect A.E. Doyle, the Central Library took two years to construct at a cost of $480,000, according to the library's website.

The library serves as the main branch of the Multnomah County Library system. Its collection occupies approximately 17 miles of shelf space and weighs in at more than 875 tons, according to Wikipedia.

The Central Library is home to the Beverly Cleary Children’s Library and the Henry Failing Art and Music Library; it also features the Sterling Room for Writers, the Collins Gallery, and the John Wilson Room.
