One Oregon police department’s prized hog has received a fresh coat of paint.

No, we’re not talking about a motorcycle.

A life-size concrete pig that stands in front of a public safety building in Astoria, OR, recently received a full restoration, thanks to a local Eagle Scout.

Hog's Arrival

The swine is a prized treasure of the Astoria Police Department, despite its unsolicited arrival in the middle of the night two decades ago, the police said in a press release.

Eagle Scout candidate Michael Peden,16, restored the prized police pig.

Legend has it that in 1993, an anonymous donor dropped off the pig in the department’s gravel parking lot. It was never claimed.

“While some believe that there was a backhanded message in the pig, the department embraced it and left it where it was,” the police said. But after years of deterioration, the concrete critter was in a sad state.

Pig Restoration

“[Its] ears had separated from the body, and it had severe pitting,” the police department said.

The concrete hog had seen better days before Peden's paint job.

The pig was restored as part of 16-year-old Michael Peden’s Eagle Scout project. Local businesses contributed materials in a burst of porky pride.

The concrete surface was repaired, repainted and its ears were reattached, the department said. Details on the type of paint products used were not supplied, but a local news outlet reported that it took Peden three weeks to complete the work. He enlisted a Boy Scout with a steady hand to paint the eyes, he said.

With his new look, the pig got a new promotion … to a more prominent location on the campus.

We’d say this is one hog ready to serve (and protect).
