PPG Veteran to Lead Expanded Unit

PPG Industries’ vastly expanded North American architectural coatings business will be a blended family led by a familiar face, the company says.

Scott B. Sinetar, PPG vice president, architectural coatings, North America, will lead the business, which now combines operations with AkzoNobel's North American decorative paints business, PPG announced Monday (April 1).

The same day, the companies announced completion of the $1.05 billion sale of the AkzoNobel business to Pittsburgh-based PPG.

Acquiring AkzoNobel's Decorative Paints division in North America expands PPG's reach in home centers, independent paint dealers, and company paint stores.

The acquisition more than doubles PPG's presence throughout North America and expands the company's reach in all three major North American distribution channels: home centers, independent paint dealers and company-owned paint stores.

New Lineup

The new company will have both PPG and former AkzoNobel personnel, Sinetar said in an announcement.

Sinetar, an industry veteran, has been with PPG for 24 years and was with Olympic Paints and Stains before that. In his newly expanded role, he will report to executive vice president Michael H. McGarry.

“Scott’s extensive background in architectural coatings will serve him well in this expanded role, having joined PPG in 1989 from the original Olympic Paints and Stains acquisition,” McGarry said. “Since then, he has served in many roles of increasing responsibility in the architectural coatings business.”

Sinetar was named to his current position in 2006 after serving as manager, national accounts; national sales manager; director of sales; and general manager, architectural coatings. He also held a variety of positions at Olympic Paints and Stains.

A native of Bethpage, NY, Sinetar earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Monmouth University and completed executive education at Carnegie Mellon University.

'Smooth Transition'

“As we begin to integrate our outstanding organizations across North America, our combined architectural coatings business will be led by a strong team representing both PPG and the former AkzoNobel operations,” Sinetar said. “We look forward to a smooth transition and to continuing to exceed our customers’ expectations.”

PPG's new Architectural Coatings portfolio includes former AkzoNobel brands Glidden, Flood, Liquid Nails, Sico and CIL. PPG will also license Dulux and Devoe architectural coatings and Sikkens architectural wood products, as part of the transaction.

The AkzoNobel acquisition is the second largest in PPG's 130-year history, second only to the $3.1 billion purchase of the SigmaKalon Group in 2008.

Founded in 1883, PPG has global headquarters in Pittsburgh and operates in nearly 70 countries. Sales in 2012 were $15.2 billion.
