For the second consecutive year, members of the American Subcontractors Association have elected a painting contractor as their president.

Jack Austhof, president and owner of Sobie Company Inc., an interior finishing company based in Dutton, MI, will take office July 1 as the 2013-2014 ASA president, the organization announced March 22.

As the newly slated ASA president, Jack Austhof says he will work to exceed membership expectations.

He succeeds Walter Bazan Jr., of Bazan Painting Company, St. Louis, MO. Bazan Painting is a full-service industrial, commercial, institutional and residential painting contractor, with clients nationwide.

ASA members have also selected a slate of new officers.

Commercial Painter to Lead

Purchased by Austhof in 1994, Sobie Co. is a commercial finishing company that provides a variety of services including construction, flooring, plaster work, fireproofing and interior and exterior finishing. Projects include large residences to multi-million dollar commercial painting jobs.

A scan of the company’s portfolio posted on its website shows historic restoration of moldings at the Grand Rapids Civic Theater, interior work done at the Grand Rapids Public Library, as well as work completed at hospitals and restaurants.

Sobie Company performed custom decorative restoration work at the historic Grand Rapids Civic Theater.

Austhof joined the company as a carpenter in 1979, after serving in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970.

Reaching 'a Higher Standard'

In his role as president, Austhof will preside at meetings of ASA’s board of directors, executive committee, and the membership of the association. He also will serve as the principal spokesperson for the association and appoint the chairs, vice chairs and members of ASA committees and task forces.

“In every way that ASA works on behalf of subcontractors, ASA seeks to reach a higher standard,” Austhof said. “As your president, I will work to ensure that ASA continues not just to meet your expectations—but also to exceed them.”

Past Association Roles, Leadership

Austhof has played an active role in the west Michigan construction industry for many years, according to ASA.

As an officer and director of the Builders Exchange of Grand Rapids and Western Michigan, he focused on membership development, building that association to the third-largest Builders Exchange in the nation.

Austhof succeeds Walter Bazan Jr., the president of Bazan Painting Co. of St. Louis, MO.

Recognizing the need for subcontractor education and advocacy, Austhof also helped establish ASA of west Michigan. He served as president of ASA of Michigan from 2008 to 2010.

Other Leaders Slated

ASA members elected three other national officers to one-year terms beginning July 1:

  • Vice President Mike Jones, M.L. Jones Acoustics Inc., Tulsa, OK.;
  • Treasurer M. Brian Johnson, Soil Consultants Inc., Charleston, SC; and
  • Secretary Letitia Haley Barker, Haley Greer Inc., Dallas.

Elected to three-year terms on ASA’s board of directors, also effective July 1, were:

  • Anthony Brooks, Platinum Drywall, Maumelle, AR;
  • Jason File, Les File Drywall Inc., Albuquerque, NM;
  • Vince Migliazzo, Mark One Electric Co., Kansas City, MO;
  • Russell O’Rourke, O’Rourke & Associates L.P.A., Cleveland, OH; and
  • Jeff VanderLaan, Kent Companies Inc., Grand Rapids, MI.

Founded in 1966, ASA is non-profit trade association dedicated to improving the business environment for trade contractors in the construction industry.
