Drop your paint brush and grab a stylus.

University of Tokyo scientists have developed an augmented reality-based system that enables users to “paint” a room via tablet. The protoype is called Lighty.

The Japanese researchers describe the Lighty system in this video.

A camera mounted in the ceiling displays the room on the tablet. The user then paints with a brush called a “squirt” to control a serious of robotic lights (also embedded in the ceiling), illuminating different areas of the room and eliciting a variety of "moods," according to the researchers.

The lights can target all areas of the room and account for furniture, the researchers said in Lighty: A Painting Interface for Room Illumination by Robotic Light Array, which documents their work.

This video created by the researchers explains the Lighty system.

Tech-based Interior Design Tool

Blending graphic design with interior design, reports suggest that the Lighty system could easily make it to the consumer market.

“It isn’t difficult to see the system embedded in a wall at the entrance of rooms where standard light switches would normally be,” according to

Another report on notes, “Lighty might actually have quite a few uses in places with a lot of complex lighting such as museums, theaters, conference halls and even restaurants, bars and cafés.”

But, for now, it’s a small demo of what could be the future in interior design, lighting and painting.
