Papers and presentations on green coatings, green surface prep, high-performance architectural coatings, and other topics are now being solicited for SSPC 2014.

The Society for Protective Coatings has also announced the third year of its scholarship program, which is now available to all eligible students, regardless of their field of study.

Call for Papers

SSPC 2014, the annual conference and exhibition dedicated to protective, marine and commercial coatings, will be held Feb. 10-13 in Orlando, FL.

The technical program will focus on current challenges and solutions for the coatings industry. Topics will include new technologies, surface preparation, application issues, coatings failures, health and safety.

SSPC 2014 paper and presentation topics of interest include high-performance architectural coatings, part of the Commercial Coatings Track at SSPC 2013.

The deadline to submit an abstract is June 1, 2013. For more information, contact Sara Badami.

Authors of accepted papers will be notified by July 1. The first draft will be due by Sept. 1;  the final paper, by Dec. 1. Powerpoint presentations for the show will be due by Jan. 3, 2014.

SSPC's Education Program Advisory Committee will evaluate abstracts for originality; quality of the abstract (clearly defines outcomes, flows smoothly); relevance/significance to the industry; and objectives.

Presentation Topics

Presentation topics of interest include:

  • Advances in containment designs;
  • Advances in green surface preparation (e.g., waterjetting);
  • Aerospace;
  • Best application practices for high-solids materials, coating application methods, and green application techniques;
  • Cleaner abrasives;
  • Coating failures, coating inspection equipment, coating types and characteristics, and coatings to support emerging green industries (e.g., wind power, nuclear coatings);
  • Commercial coatings, gas and oil pipeline coatings, green coatings, powder coatings, and marine and military coatings;
  • Corrosion control;
  • Environmental health and safety;
  • Regulations;
  • Estimating;
  • Surface preparation; and
  • Women in the coatings industry.

SSPC calls its annual conference and exhibition "the place to discuss, share and hear a range of issues relevant to paint and coatings."

Scholarship Program

SSPC has also announced the renewal of its college scholarship program for the third year. Any student who is starting or continuing an education in an institution of higher learning may apply for one of four $2,500 scholarships.

Students need not be pursuing a coatings-related curriculum to qualify.

The deadline for applications is April 30, 2013.

The scholarships will be awarded for the 2013-14 school year to students at educational institutions in the United States or Canada. Scholarship funds will be applied directly to the cost of the students' courses, and SSPC will work with the financial aid offices to ensure proper use of the funds.

Applicants must be high school seniors planning on enrolling, or already enrolled, full time in an accredited institution of higher learning with a three- or four-year curriculum. The candidate must be a member of SSPC in good standing, or a child or grandchild of an SSPC member in good standing.

Applications must include:

  • Two letters of recommendation from parties unrelated to the applicant;
  • High school or college transcripts; and
  • A personal letter expressing why the student deserves the scholarship and explaining his/her academic plans.

Download the scholarship application here.

A three-member panel designated by the Board of Governors will choose the scholarship recipients.

Scholarships are open to any student meeting the above criteria. (Before 2012, the student had to be enrolled in a coatings-related field at select schools.)
