Did you know JPCL is available in multiple formats? In addition to the print edition, you can read the full October issue as a digital flipbook online, in a downloadable PDF or as individual articles on paintsquare.com.

Issue Contents

In his “Letter from the Editor,” Editor-in-Chief Charlie Lange discusses the current spooky news in the industry just in time for Halloween and teases some of the issues featured stories.

“But even in the best of times, coatings professionals lie wary, year-round, of another nemesis, far spookier than any ghoul or goblin: corrosion,” wrote Lange. “And when it comes to the coatings projects they’re undertaking, so many things can potentially run afoul and lead to a truly scary situation for all of the stakeholders involved.

“But fear not—JPCL is here to ease at least some of your worries and give you some information that can keep those nightmares from popping into reality, Freddy Krueger-style.”

Following Lange’s letter to readers, the issue pulled together some of its most-read stories on PaintSquare.com in its Coverage section. These topics included the paint shortage and increase in prices.

In terms of this issue’s content, Julia Baur, a Chemist with KTA-Tator, Inc., investigates delaminated coil coating on metal roof panels in “Unraveling a Coil Coating Mystery.” By looking at the coated steel decking under microscope, Baur explores the potential causes of the delamination on the samples.

Continuing on, Murphy Mahaffey, METYX Composites, discusses guidance about passive fire protection, or PFP, application in the issue's Maintenance Tips column. This article includes proper training techniques, an outline of equipment and related supplies required and a review of structures that can benefit from PFP applications.

Looking to in-depth features, readers can learn about a fast-set water transmission pipeline coating solution that shaved days off of a project schedule. In “How Faster Throughput Pipe Coatings Can Shave Days Off Application” by Gino Sincovich, Water Transmission; and Scott Neaves, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine, the authors expand on the process on coating the interior and exterior of 276 pipe sections for a new three-mile-long, treated water transmission main in British Columbia, Canada.

As a final installation, the October issue features “Coatings Contractors Give Buffalo Bridge a Lift” by Chris Nachreiner, Erie Painting & Maintenance Inc. This article recaps the repainting of the Ohio Street Lift Bridge in Buffalo, New York, which required extra coordination to allow both tourist and industrial boat traffic under the bridge to pass through uninterrupted—and how a father-son contractor duo came full circle, with both having rehabbed the same bridge more than three decades apart.

In closing the issue, readers can also find the recurring Bid Bits and Paint by Numbers articles.

Looking to November

According to Lange, readers can expect the following topics in the November issue:

  • Aluminum surface preparation on U.S. Navy ships;
  • Coating solutions for offshore wind structures;
  • Special feature: Blasting Resource Guide;
  • JPCL Prestige Awards nominations preview; and
  • Industry news, coatings community comments, upcoming events and more.

JPCL Archives, Subscriptions

Following the release of the issue, the magazine will be added to the JPCL archives—containing 25 years of JPCL digital issues dating back to 1996—which cover a priceless collection of evergreen information, solutions to real-life problems, case studies, insight from experts and a historical record of the industry.

In 2020 alone, Technology Publishing CEO Brion Palmer reported that more than 25,000 industry professionals accessed the archives. However, the content is only available to current JPCL subscribers and, in separating from SSPC, is no longer an association benefit.
